Class Rosters FAQs

Can I use data from the class roster for research purposes?

Data from the class roster may not be published or distributed outside of the university without prior approval. For research purposes, approval is required from the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects. All data must be presented in aggregate. Suppress all non-zero counts which are less than five, unless they are in a category labeled “unknown.”

What if I receive a FOIA request for class roster data?

No individuals should respond to FOIA or similar direct requests from external sources using the data or information from the class roster. All FOIA requests must be made to the External Relations and Communications.

How old is the data?

The rosters are extracted from the Enterprise Data Warehouse each morning. The data should be the latest enrollments from the previous day.

Are these “official” rosters?

No, official class rosters should be obtained from the Office of the Registrar Class List/Roster.

Why do these rosters differ from those provided by the Office of the Registrar?

DAIR rosters do not use “live” data. The rosters are extracted from the Enterprise Data Warehouse each morning. The data reflects the latest enrollments from the previous day.

Why do I see someone else listed as instructor for my classes?

The instructor designated as “primary” by the controlling department is always the instructor listed. However, secondary instructors may obtain rosters for all their sections.

Why do some students have Course Registration Numbers (CRNs) different from others in the same class?

This happens with crosslisted courses and packaged courses. The CRN under the student enrollment columns is how the student registered.

Why are some credit hours equal to zero?

There are multiple reasons that credit hours may be listed as zero on rosters.

  • Some courses permit students to enroll for zero credit hours.
  • Some courses require a student to enroll in multiple sections (e.g., a lecture and a discussion), and credit is awarded for only one of the sections.
  • If a student drops or cancels the course, the credit hours will show as zero.

Why are some of the grades different from what I see in Banner?

DAIR rosters include original end-of-term grades. Subsequent grade changes will not be reflected on DAIR rosters. (Midterm grades, when posted, are overwritten by the end-of-term grade.)

Are grades on DAIR rosters ever updated?

No. The grades shown are original end-of-term grades. Subsequent grade changes will not be reflected on DAIR rosters. (Midterm grades, when posted, are overwritten by the end-of-term grade.)
